What are trading sessions

The currency market runs 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, because it is split into four major sessions — Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. Each matches the working hours of a major financial centre. When one session closes, another opens, so the market stays active around the clock from Monday to Friday.

Why sessions matter — where the big money is

Institutional money — hedge funds, investment banks, market-makers — is active in the windows with the deepest liquidity. The London–New York overlap concentrates most of the daily capital-market volume, and the price moves that actually matter happen there. If you trade in 'weak' sessions (for example, Sydney or Tokyo alone), you are moving in a market with wider spreads, thinner liquidity and choppier moves. Aligning your schedule with the 'strong' sessions is not optional — it's simply where the big money is.

When is the best time to trade

The highest liquidity and tightest spreads occur during the overlap of the London and New York sessions. In that window both major financial centres are active, and pairs such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY move the most. Beginners should avoid the first minutes after a session opens, when volatility can be unpredictable.
